Transforming Rural Primary Education
Critical to our vision of village transformation and villages being a worthy place of living, is ensuring an
inclusive and equitable quality education.
Education ensures that the children and the larger community in general are able to exercise their rights
as a citizen of the country and further reaffirm their voice in the democracy. Hence, “education” and
quality learning opportunities are critical for human fulfilment, bettering life opportunities and in building
better villages. India has made good progress on getting rural children into to schools. However, retention
and quality of their learning are severely insufficient to provide skills needed for their future lives as
citizen, parents and workers.
The Transforming Rural India Foundation intends to build upon the agency of mobilized rural communities
that take ownership of their own development and thus enhance sustainability.
Our focus is on primary schools since this is foundational to future learning and knowledge opportunities.
The fourth United Nations Sustainable Development Goal is: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality
education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all. That appropriately captures our intent. We
aim to ensure good quality education to all rural children that would help in the development of their
capabilities to fulfil their valued individual and collective aspirations irrespective of differences of caste,
class, religion, gender and ability.
The strategic levers are
Support communities to develop perspectives, skills and knowledge of women in organized
collectives to bring a shared sense of responsibility towards improving learning for their children.
Engage the public education system to build the capabilities of frontline staff and to ensure smooth
fund flows for right to education mandated infrastructure and services.
