BASF:
Kids Labs, Promoting Interest in Science Amongst Primary School Students
The BASF Kids’ Lab program is an interactive, fun and free chemistry education program, designed for
kids aged 6 to 12 years to discover the world of chemistry through a hands-on lab experience. BASF
believes that education is the key to the future of our children, and it plays an important role in the
development of society. Through the Kids Lab program, BASF is ensuring to optimize its Social
Engagement Strategy, to open-up learning opportunities and encourage children's sense of discovery.
By conducting simple yet interesting experiments themselves, this platform serves to inculcate good
science methods and skills amongst children. These skills help meet the challenges of tomorrow and
create a sustainable future. In Asia Pacific, more than 300,000 kids have participated in this program
since 2002. BASF Kids’ Lab was introduced to India in 2004, and to date 50,000 kids from schools
across the country have learned from its fun-filled experiments.
Tata Chemicals:
Community Before Business
With its interventions Tata Chemicals has eliminated the dependence of Mithapur, a drought prone
region, on ground water. Various in-house water conservation measures, management of rain fed lakes
and using the innovative Seawater Desalination Technologies helped achieve this mission. Tata
Chemicals revamped the entire technology of water usage by converting fresh water and by substituting
fresh water with seawater. Reusing the water for different purposes helped reduce dependency on fresh
water resources.
A Make up Water (MUW) plant was set up where the condensate was a product and salt was the by-
product. This unique MUW generates 4.5 KL of condensate per ton of salt thus generating on an average
20 lakh KL of water from the plant. TCRDs water management and conversation projects provide water
for agriculture, animal husbandry, drinking and household use.
With this project, Tata Chemicals has reduced its blue water footprint by 60% in the last 3 years.
