The trajectory of chemistry is interesting. With this science becoming
more sophisticated, year after year, various sectors have evolved and
progressed. Chemistry is not a by -product of the industrial age; it is rather
the other way round. Though unfortunately perceived in many quarters as
synonymous with harmful, it is truly chemistry that has helped various
industries such as packaging (including food), water purification,
and white goods make considerable advancements in sustainable
manufacturing.
Chemicals are the magic dust that enable almost every industry. Across the
world, almost 40% of manufacturing is driven by chemicals. Given that
India is the world’s 6th largest chemical manufacturer, this sector will be
key to achieving the Make in India targets. Being an essential link in the
value chain, the sector holds great promise to meet the increasing
demands of a growing nation and add to the growth momentum.
Though India has the potential to become a major destination for global
chemical companies, currently it accounts for only 3% of the global
chemicals market. India’s chemical sector needs to implement global
safety and environmental administration standards as well as quality
regulations necessary for global acceptance. The CII National Committee
on Chemicals would urge the Government to create national standards to
help build a strong global image of the sector.
I am confident that India’s Chemical Sector will continue to bring
innovations and technological improvements to aid the country’s
sustainable and responsible growth.
