Project Saakar is driven with a mission to bridge the rural urban divide and bring to life the dream of a
developed India. Pursuing the Government’s Zero Open Defecation Mission, this project has made steady
progress in constructing a toilet in every home of the villages under our ambit. Also aligned with the
'Swachh Bharat Mission', this initiative is driven under a Public Private Community-Partnership (PPCP)
project implemented through our NGO, K.K. Birla Memorial Society. Encouraged by our campaign on
sanitation, the 34 villages drove the construction of 3500 toilets. Building associated infrastructure such as
the drainage systems, makes toilets usable leading to a habit shift. We also encourage construction of
                     sustainable toilets.

Several of India’s villages remain poorly connected with cities, especially during rains, for want of concrete
roads and functional drainage systems. Rural India’s economic growth depends largely on the availability of
such basic amenities and on livelihood opportunities. Dovetailing our efforts at constructing cemented
concrete roads and drains, into the Government of India’s efforts, we thus sourced manpower for our pilot
project under the MNREGA Scheme. Gram Panchayats were invited to facilitate construction of roads and
stone pavements (kharanja) in these villages.

Taking our collaboration with Government a step further, we effectively utilized funds available under
various PPP schemes for village infrastructure such as community drinking water systems, culverts,
community halls, crematoriums and boundary walls. We restored and conserved few traditional water
bodies under the Jal Swavlamban Abhiyan in villages of Kota and Baran districts.
